summary:
It is my job to save marriages. I have counseled couples through alcoholism and infidelity, through unrealistic expectations and coping with changes in their circumstances. I have advised women to get out while they still had their lives, I have advised men to let go before they did something they would regret. I've seen perfection crumble when tapped with reality; I've seen foundations of stone that keep the shakiest couples intact.

Sometimes, though, it isn't the marriage, and it isn't the individuals. Sometimes the flame has simply died, buried under too many years of ashes, allowed to smolder for too long.

Severus and Hermione were one such couple. They had grown apart over the years, and those are the hardest rifts to repair, even when both parties want to.
