I was surfing through HP Lexicon when I came across information regarding Prof. Quirrell.... it would seem information in the previous books point to him having the position for at least two years, maybe more, with a leave of absence somewhere in there.

What happened to the curse Dumbledore said Tom put on the job? It might be plausible to think that Voldemort could counteract it, assuming of course that Quirrell had only been in place for a year before his leave of absence...

Ahh but the term leave of absence makes it clear that he was planning on coming back, even before Voldemort's possession. Yet the curse indicates that the teacher will either leave permanently, be fired, or die.

So what happened? Am I just getting the curse wrong or did Rowling not think of this?

Hmm, well perhaps since Quirrell came back as Tom's parasitic host the curse was shall we say rendered useless?

Or not.

Yes, but I'm bothered by the fact that he could apparently plan to come back even before Voldemort made his home in the back of his head.

Lupin could have fully planned to come back if he didn't wisely decide to leave before the Howlers rolled in. Planning doesn't mean anything, really. Any teacher who planned to come back could have been killed over the summer. o.O

I thought that was a joke, that the DADA position is cursed? It never occured to me that Voldemort actually cursed the position. Where is that said and when? I guess I was a bit fast with my reading then.

He didn't curse it magically. Dumbles says that ever since he turned down Voldy that no one could keep the position.

Dumbledore mentioned it to Harry in their last lesson before they went to hunt down the Horcrux, I believe.

Seems like I should consider a re-read. No wonder with all that excitement and anticipation in my head. I have just raced through the whole book.
Anyway, thanks for enlightening me.

At the close of chapter 20 "Lord Voldemort's request" Dumbledore says "The aftermath of our little meeting proved that. You see, we have never been able to keep a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher for longer than a year since I refused the post to Lord Voldemort." It may be referred to elsewhere but that is where I remember.

Re: Quirrel - Dumbledore may either have been suspicious of his return (but thought a near miss because of his adventures in Eastern Europe) or he may have thought that Voldemort's interference had ended. Just conjecture.

Maybe Quirrell having Voldie in his body confused the curse. When Quirrell came back, he "wasn't quite himself" anymore. Being part-Quirrell and part-Voldie perhaps sort of made him a different person. But then again, since Voldie, in Quirrell's body, did kinda get to teach (well, he was there) the DADA class, shouldn't this have nullified the curse?

. . . now my head hurts, as well. Better check under my turban.

DOH!

Snape told Umbridge he'd applied for the DADA job every year since he started working at Hogwarts.

Because it fell vacant every year. ROFL!

I'm probably the last person on earth to get that. Sorry, you can all move along now.

Don't worry.

There are so many complicated theories and characters that simple things can often get overlooked.

Although you'd think Snape would notice a pattern with the DADA teachers. It makes you wonder what happened to the ones before Quirrell...

Why did Dumbledore give Snape the DADA role this year? This is the question that intrigues me right now. He did it knowing full well he wouldn't last in the job more than a year (and obviously that's important) and they seem to be fairly bad ending as well - people don't just pack up at the end of 12 months.

I'm thinking Dumbledore (and possibly the rest of the Order) needed a reason for Snape to leave Hogwarts. Voldemort wants more information than Snape can provide before really endangering the Order and Harry, and if he's away from the school, he can't spy on Dumbledore as readily.

It's possible Voldemort doesn't know about the consequences of the DADA position, otherwise why would he have Snape constantly applying for it?

Just an idea though...
