I've noticed that many people seem sold on the idea that since JK seemed to have spent all of HBP reinforcing how evil and rotten he is, and so he must be evil.
Remember in PoA where JK spent a good part of the book setting up how horrible Sirius was? He murdered Harry's parents (effectively, by giving their location to Voldemort), he killed 12 Muggles and Pettigrew, and he even looks like an evil mass-murderer. He turned out to be a completely innocent person, even if he had a few grudges.
Now, I'm not saying Snape is a good person, but maybe we're jumping to conclusions. Yes, he killed Dumbledore, but Dumbledore also pleaded, which seems very out of character for him. I think writing off Snape as completely evil is a bit premature.
Anyone else have any comments on the connection between Snape and Sirius? Am I just completely off-base here? |

| You've put your finger on what I've been feeling exactly. It seems too obvious from the book's beginning for Snape to be evil. That just isn't usually JKR's method of operating. Granted, it was a surprise for Snape to kill Dumbledore; it wasn't a real surprise for him to turn out evil. There were people out there convinced he was evil all along, not to mention Harry (and when has Harry ever been right about Snape?). |

Harry has NEVER been right about Snape. There is a definite pattern in the way he mistrusts, overlooks, and hates Snape. Everytime this happens, something goes wrong.
In PS/SS, he finally finds out is was Quirrell all along.
In OotP, he looks for an Order member for help with Sirius in trouble, and completely overlooks Snape. Sirius dies.
He mistrusts Snape and things happens. There are other instances that I have heard of that I can't think of right now, but I think part of him maturing will take being able to see that people who act nasty are not necessarily evil. I.E. Snape.
You're right on the Sirius thing. |

I'm glad other people see the pattern. JK does not write so simply. The entire series she's been making Snape look bad (through Harry's eyes) only to have members of the Order say that he's fighting with them and spying.
I think Harry sees things through black and white glasses, whereas reality hardly is.
I just can't see JK being so obvious as to practically tell us that Snape is evil. Not nice, maybe, but evil?
Hasn't the entire series been about knowledge being power and that you cannot judge anyone by what they seem? |

And Harry sees Snape through hate-coloured glasses, and we see the events through [mostly] Harry's eyes. It's the whole 'filter' thing, again.
And then, there's also a kind of pattern with Dumbledore and keeping secrets [Sirius and his significance, why Occulmency is important, prophecy, details of prophecy, what he knows about Voldimort], yet Harry always finds them out. Eventually. Will he find out what is possibly Dumbledore's final secret -- that he ordered/forced Snape to kill him? [If that is indeed what happened. I'd like to believe it.] And if Harry does, will it be too late for Snape?
