Everyone seems to have a different opinion as to what makes a fic AU. It seems to me that any HP fic written by other than JKR is, by definition, AU. Most people though seem offended if their story is accused of being AU. I tend to consider AU to mean a setting or situation significantly different from canon, such as Hogwarts is now on the moon . . . others though seem to consider the introduction of anything new or different as AU. So where is this rambling leading? I think most ‘intelligent’ people will realize that nearly all fics started before HBP will not follow canon. The same thing happened to Sirius before OotP, and yet most of us were able to deal with it. Thus it seems like a simple notice of ‘HBP compliant’ or ‘Pre-HBP’ should be enough to fill everyone in on the status of the story. Now, whether other aspects of the story are AU, well if you believe Hogwarts would do better on the moon, that’s your business. Rolling Eyes

Sounds entirely reasonable. I'd add that by "my story is canon" people who's initials aren't JKR mean "compatible with canon". Some people go to great lengths to get the details and style right. They want to write something like a missing chapter. Something you could slide into the books and no one could tell the difference. Others aim at that but don't work too hard at it, and still others are playing thought experiments, with Hogwarts on the moon - or Snape getting killed in the shrieking shack incident.

I have two stories, one - Rowan's Secret - is set during Harry's 6th year and didn't have a hope of being compatible after HBP came out, although I worked hard at not contradicting anything that came before. I can finish it because it's already started, but it would bother me too much to start a new fic that so obviously contradicts the one true storyline.

The other, Unforgivable Lessons, was set during Snape's seventh year. I got pretty lucky on that one - very little has been directly contradicted (I did mention Sev's dad as a wizard) On the upside, it looks like my guess on Snape's feelings for Lily is likely to be confirmed in book 7, and I knew he'd had practice in casting Avada Kedavra. <grin>

So, I'm not feeling any particular need to add flaggage for UL, but I did change the summary for RS to indicate it is pre HBP. I don't mind that it's wildly incompatible with canon, but I'd hate for anyone reading to think I made any of those changes on purpose!
