Obviously from the note it will be someone who Voldemort will recognize from the initials although it may not necessarily be a proper name as everybody and their brother seem to be giving themselves strange titles. For some strange reason I want it to be Snape, but I can't see him knowing about all of Voldemort's horcruxes and not telling Dumbledore (that and I can't make the initals work at all. Smile )

Yeah, I hadn't thought about him. I was thinking that someone had recently beaten Dumbledore to the horcrux but obviously that doesn't have to be the case. It could have been taken years and years ago.

Oh, how interesting. Wonder what his middle name was?

Sirius and Regulus had an uncle name Alphard. Perhaps that's it?

At first thought, I would guess Regulus Black. The only thing that concerns me with this theory is the fact that EVERYONE came to the conclusion that is was Regulus in about four seconds, and JKR is very rarely that obvious...but it is still entirely possible.

After my inital read, I'm at the conclusion that it is Regulus Black. And while I do think it seems a bit too easy, as we all know how JKR is with the obvious...she's not, there are little clues pointing to Regulus earlier in the series.

In book five, when Sirius and Harry are having their conversation (it was either Sirius and Harry or the conversation between Moody and Harry) about the Blacks, Sirius tells Harry that Regulus was a Death Eater only for a short time before he backed out and was apparently, and quite surprisingly according to Sirius, killed by Voldemort personally. I say quite surprisingly, because, according to Sirius, it was rare for Voldemort (at that point) to do his own killing. I can't think of a stronger reason than Regulus swiping a piece of Voldemort's soul that would cause Voldemort to carry out the murder in person.

Actually Sirius says "No he was murder by Voldemort. Or on Voldemort orders more likely; I doubt Regulus was ever important enough to be killed by Voldemort in person" (OOTP, 104). Still doesn't discount him though...

Two words: Regulus. Black. I paused at that part and thought long and hard about it... It took me about five minutes actually, to come up with him.

*despondently* She probably will rename an old character. Does that a lot... It was slightly too obvious, as someone said beforehand.

Severus' mind is his own. We can only speculate.

Is it that obvious? To those of us picking over every crumb maybe, but to most readers? He's a character only ever mentioned in passing, maybe twice.

It seems like. Most people remember things that have to do with Sirius, as he died.

And of course, after thinking long and hard and flipping through the other books, it'd be kind of absentminded not to come up with it. His name is the only one that fits.

But then of course, there are, as you said, the people who simply read it and ponder, but don't dive in until they're neck deep.

The tenor of the note does point towards Regulus and the initials could match if Uncle Alphard was - at the point of Regulus birth - not already estranged from Sirius' parents.

But then I wonder why Regulus apparently didn't confide in someone from the original Order, like his brother or Dumbledore? This knowledge alone could have rehabilitated Regulus and keep him out of Azkaban if Dumbledore took up the matter.

However, entering a new character at this point in the series does seem rather pointless unless she plans to write more than 7 volumes (in which case I shan't complain at all).

Seemed obvious to me right away that it was Regulus... which does indeed make me suspicious that it's not.

But who else could it be?

A former schoolmate? Most of them don't even associate Tom Riddle with Lord Voldemort and I don't think his original name is public knowledge.

If it is not Regulus the question remains why - whoever R. A. B. is - does address Voldemort with a title used by the Death Eaters. Also I wonder - do you really think the initials RAB are common enough to be worne by more than 1 now dead, former Death Eater? It strikes me as unlikely.
